Cleaning and Organizing in Seattle, WA: One Zone at a Time

When a room is both cluttered and dirty, the order of work matters more than the products. Wipe a counter that is still covered with packages and you clean around them. Scrub a tub while every shelf above it is full of bottles and you end up moving them twice. This second visit to a Seattle home on August 28 was built around that order.

The client had booked JenyClean before. On this visit the job was cleaning plus help with organizing: sorting through what had piled up, freeing the surfaces and putting things back where they belong. The two zones that needed it most were the kitchen and the bathroom.

Where things stood

In the kitchen, opened shipping boxes and shopping bags sat on the counters and on the floor. The bar counter between the kitchen and the living area was covered with packages, papers, a tote bag and odds and ends. Several cabinet doors stood open, and the sink held dishes.

In the bathroom, cosmetics and toiletries filled every shelf and the top of the storage cabinet. In the tub, a film covered the surface and hair had collected around the drain. The tub faucet and spout were dull gray, and the grout lines along the tile, especially where the wall meets the tub, showed visible dark spots.

The order of work

1. One zone at a time. The job was not spread thinly across the whole home. The kitchen was one zone, the bathroom another, and each was taken to a finished state. A half-sorted room with clean patches in between is harder to live in than one room that is fully done.

2. Clear the surfaces first. Before any cleaning, what was sitting on the counters and the bar counter came off them. Boxes, bags and loose items were gathered in one place, so the surfaces underneath were actually free.

3. Sort what piled up. The piles were taken apart item by item, and things that had a place went back to it. Sorting comes before cleaning because a pile cannot be cleaned under.

4. Clean what is now reachable. With the counters empty, the dishes were done and the sink, counters and bar counter were cleaned edge to edge rather than around objects.

5. Repeat the same order in the bathroom. Shelves and the counter were cleared first, then the bathroom was worked through fully: the tub, including the film and the hair at the drain; the faucet and spout; the grout lines along the tile; the sink and the counter.

6. Put things back in place. Once each surface was clean, the items that live there went back, in order. In the bathroom that meant a few bottles on the tub corners instead of every ledge being full.

What changed

The kitchen counters and the bar counter are clear, the floor is free of boxes and bags, and the sink is empty. In the bathroom, the tub is white again, the faucet is back to chrome, and the grout lines along the tub edge are light again instead of spotted dark.

Not everything at once

Life in Seattle is full: work, family, errands. Things accumulate, and a full sort-out keeps getting pushed back because it looks like one huge job. It does not have to be. Moving gradually, one room, one cabinet, one zone at a time, is usually easier than trying to do everything in one day. A second visit that finishes the kitchen and the bathroom is real progress, and the next zone can come later.
