Upholstery Cleaning in Kirkland, WA: A Patio Sofa, One Seat at a Time

The line down the middle of that seat cushion is one pass of the extraction wand. Left of it is what a summer on a covered patio did to a light fabric sofa. Right of it is the same fabric a few minutes later.

The homeowners in Kirkland had already started looking at new sofas. The frame was fine, the cushions still held their shape, but the upholstery had gone from white to a patchy gray. Before buying a replacement, they wanted to see whether a proper cleaning would bring it back.

What a summer outdoors leaves on fabric

A covered patio keeps the rain off, but not much else. Pollen settles on everything through spring and early summer. Dust blows in from the yard. People sit down in outdoor clothes, put their feet up, and the family dog climbs on with whatever is on its paws. On a light, tightly woven fabric all of that shows. On the seat you can see the darkest band where people actually sit, small dark specks scattered across the surface, and a gray haze along the front edge where legs rest against it. The back cushion had the same haze, lighter.

Pre-treat, then extract, section by section

Vacuuming alone would not move this kind of soil; it sits down in the weave. The cleaner worked the sofa in sections. Each section got a textile cleaner first, given time to loosen what had worked into the fibers. Then the extractor went over it: hot water sprayed into the fabric and pulled straight back out through the same wand, taking the loosened dirt with it.

Working one section at a time keeps the fabric from getting soaked and keeps the edge between clean and not-yet-clean under control, so the finished sofa does not dry with water rings or a tide line. You can see that edge in the photos, and you can see the wand and hose resting on the back cushion between passes.

After

Seat, back and both arms came out one even white, with no streaks and no leftover outdoor smell. Because the extractor pulls most of the water back out, the sofa needed a few hours to dry rather than days, and on a covered patio in summer it was ready to sit on by evening. The new sofa search was put on hold.

These photos were taken with the homeowners’ permission, as all JenyClean before-and-after photos are.
