Bathroom Deep Cleaning in Bothell, WA: Getting a 1970s Bathroom Ready to Rent

A bathroom from the 1970s does not have to look new to rent well. It has to look looked-after. Someone touring a rental will forgive an almond-colored tub and a speckled vanity top. What they notice is rust at the drain, cloudy shower doors and a stained shower floor, because those read as neglect, and neglect makes people wonder about the rest of the house.

That was the brief from a Bothell homeowner getting a house ready for tenants: deep clean the bathroom so the fixtures that are staying look cared for. The fixtures were original or close to it, and each had its own kind of buildup. Here is the order the cleaner worked in and why.

Step 1: Look at every surface before wetting anything

The walkthrough came first, because the products are different for each problem and some of them should not meet.

  • Tub: cream enamel with an orange rust streak running down from the corner at the drain end, a gray film over the whole basin, and rows of round marks on the floor where a suction-cup bath mat had sat for a long time.
  • Tub walls: blue-gray panels with white, streaky soap film.
  • Shower doors: frosted sliding glass in an aluminum frame, with scale on the glass and grime packed into the bottom track.
  • Second shower: a white textured shower pan with a tan film spread across the floor, darker in the corners and along the back edge, and a lighter ring around the drain.
  • Vanity: a one-piece cultured-marble top with a white haze in the bowl and water spots on the brushed-nickel faucet.

Step 2: Rust first, on its own

Rust is the stain that decides whether a tub looks old or dirty, so it went first while the rest of the tub was still dry. A rust remover was applied to the streak and the area around the drain only, left to work, and rinsed away completely before any other product touched the tub. Rust removers are acidic; keeping them to the stain and rinsing well protects the enamel around it.

Step 3: The rest of the tub and its walls

With the rust gone, the gray film and the bath mat marks came off the basin with a bathroom cleaner and a non-scratch pad, working from the back wall toward the front edge. The wall panels were cleaned of soap film top to bottom so nothing would run down onto the finished tub. The enamel came back to an even cream color.

The dark flecks still visible in the old caulk line along the wall are inside the sealant itself. That joint needs recaulking, which is a repair rather than a cleaning job.

Step 4: Frosted doors and tracks

Frosted glass hides scale until light hits it, and then it looks dirty from across the room. Both panels were descaled on the inside, cleaned on the outside, and dried. The bottom track, where soap and hair collect under the sliding panels, was cleared out and wiped so the doors slide cleanly and the track does not show a dark line.

Step 5: The second shower pan

The textured floor of the shower pan holds dirt in every dimple, so a wipe is not enough. The pan was treated for mildew in the corners and along the back edge, scrubbed with a brush across the whole floor to get into the texture, rinsed toward the drain and dried.

Step 6: Vanity and faucet

Last came the vanity: the haze cleaned out of the cultured-marble bowl, the top wiped, and the faucet and handles polished so the water spots were gone.

On deep cleans and move-outs, a JenyClean team lead spot-checks the work before the job is closed. For a rental, that final check is the same thing a prospective tenant will do on the first tour.
