Shower Glass Cleaning in Sammamish, WA: The See-Through Test

There is a quick way to judge a glass shower after cleaning: put a person behind it and take a picture. If you can see who is standing there, the glass is clean. If you can only see a shape, it is not. The cleaner on this Sammamish job ran that test twice, before and after.

Before: a blue shirt and not much else

The first photo is taken from outside the shower, with the cleaner standing inside. What comes through is a blur of a blue shirt, an outline of a head and a hand, and the shower head as a gray smudge. The front panel of the framed enclosure is clouded by a continuous white haze from top to bottom. Lower down, the film breaks into vertical drip lines where water has run down the glass and dried over and over. The chrome frame has a dark line of residue along its inside edge.

This is hard-water film, and it builds up slowly enough that people who use the shower every day stop noticing it.

The work

The approach is the same on any glass like this, and the order matters:

  1. Scale remover. The glass is sprayed and the product is left to soften the film. Wiping it straight away does little.
  2. Scraper. A flat blade, held low against the glass, lifts the softened film off in strips. Scale sits on top of the glass, and the scraper takes it off without scrubbing the surface.
  3. Rinse. The panels are rinsed with the hand shower to carry away what the scraper loosened.
  4. Dry polish. A dry microfiber cloth goes over each panel. Skipping this step leaves new water spots on freshly cleaned glass.

After: the same test, a different answer

Same shower, same angle, same cleaner inside. This time the face, the JenyClean logo on the shirt, the yellow microfiber cloth, the spray bottle and the scraper are all sharp through the glass. The tile behind, the window blinds and the shower head on its rail read clearly, and the chrome frame is bright again along its edges.

That is the whole point of the test. A photo of clean glass alone is hard to judge. A person behind the glass makes the difference obvious.
