In the week of August 17, JenyClean did two cleanings in Seattle, on Monday and on Friday, that no one paid for. Both came through Cleaning for a Reason, a nonprofit that arranges free house cleaning for people going through cancer treatment. A partner cleaning company does the work, and the family pays nothing.
JenyClean is one of those partner companies in the Seattle area. The job itself is an ordinary cleaning. The difference is who it is for, and the fact that the client did not have to find time, budget or energy to arrange it.
What the kitchen looked like
The kitchen in these photos was an everyday kitchen that had fallen behind. The double sink was stacked with plates, bowls, a skillet and containers, with more dishes waiting on the drying mat beside it.
The over-the-range microwave had food splatter across the ceiling, the back wall and both sides, and dried bits scattered over the glass turntable.
On the gas range, a skillet with leftover food sat on one burner, and a flat griddle pan covered the two burners on the other side, with crumbs and residue on its surface. Food scraps had dropped through the grates onto the cooktop below.
What the cleaner did
The cleaner took the kitchen zone by zone: the dishes washed and the sink cleared and wiped down, the microwave cleaned inside including the turntable, and the stove brought back in order. The skillet was washed and put away, the griddle cleared of crumbs and residue, and the grates and the cooktop under them wiped clean.
These visits run the same way as any paid job. The cleaners go through a 10-day onboarding with a supervisor and work from room-by-room checklists, and nothing about that changes when the cleaning is free.
Why JenyClean takes part
A clean kitchen does not change what a family is going through. It does take a few hours of chores off a week that is already full. After one of these visits, a client wrote to say the cleaning had helped during a hard time. For the JenyClean team, that is reason enough to keep taking part.
