Black Fixtures, White Scale: Bathroom Deep Cleaning in Redmond, WA

Dark fixtures hide fingerprints and show everything else. On a black faucet, every drop of water that dries leaves a white mark, and after enough of them the finish looks frosted. That was the state of the sink in this Redmond bathroom when JenyClean came in for a deep clean.

The faucet and both handles were speckled with white scale, heaviest on the spout. Around the faucet base and the drain the sink had orange-brown stains, and the drain flange had a dark ring.

The wrong product does more damage than the scale

The usual answer to scale is a strong descaler and a scrub pad. On chrome that works. On a dark coated finish like this one, with bronze-toned edges on the handles, an abrasive pad or a harsh product can dull the coating or wear through it at the edges, and that damage is permanent. The scale can always come off later; the finish cannot be put back.

So the cleaner used a gentle, non-abrasive product and a soft cloth, gave it time to loosen the deposits instead of scrubbing them off, and repeated on the spout where the buildup was thickest. The sink basin and drain were cleaned separately.

The faucet is dark and even again, the edge detailing intact, and the basin is white around the drain.

The shower glass had a white haze and dozens of small dark dots of mildew across the lower half, and the bottom seal along the stone threshold was stained orange-brown. The black pebble floor had a gray soap film settled between the stones. Pebble floors cannot be wiped: the film sits in the gaps, so the cleaner brushed the floor stone by stone. The glass was cleaned of spots and haze, and the threshold and seal were cleaned along their full length.
