The booking read like a simple one: a small, older house in Bothell, kitchen and bathroom only, please include the inside of the refrigerator and the oven. What the homeowner asked for
Two rooms, done properly. Not a whole-house clean, not a quick wipe-down. The kitchen with its appliances inside and out, and the bathroom. The house was older, and the homeowner said up front that some areas had not been deep cleaned in a long time.
What the walkthrough showed
On a first visit the cleaner walks the zones before starting and notes what will take time. In this house the list was longer than the booking suggested.
In the kitchen: the oven floor was carpeted with baked-on grease, the kind that has been through many heating cycles and turned into a hard brown crust. The microwave had dried splatter on every wall. The refrigerator’s crisper drawer had old spills that had dried into the corners. The double sink had limescale around the drains and a faucet base ringed with buildup.
In the bathroom: the shower pan had rust-colored staining along the edges and dark grout lines, the sink faucet was coated in scale, and the ceiling exhaust fan and the wall vent grille were gray with dust, which is why the bathroom smelled musty no matter how often it was wiped.
Why three hours became five and a half
Because two kinds of dirt look the same in a photo and behave completely differently under a cloth.
Some of it came off fast. The microwave, the vent grilles, the sink: fifteen or twenty minutes each with the right product and a brush. The cleaner had budgeted for that.
Some of it did not. Baked-on oven grease has to be treated with a degreaser, left to sit, scraped, treated again. You cannot rush it without scratching the enamel. The rust staining on the shower pan needed a rust remover and several passes. The crisper drawer had to come out, soak, and be scrubbed in the sink. Each of those zones ate an hour on its own.
This is the honest answer about hourly cleaning: a walkthrough tells you where the work is, but not always how deep it goes. The cleaner told the homeowner partway through that the oven and the shower were going to run over, and the homeowner chose to have them finished properly rather than stop at three hours.
