The glass tray told most of the story. A ring of dried sauce had baked onto it in an uneven brown shape, with a paler film spread across the rest of the glass and drips hardened along the rim. The microwave it came from was used every day in this Bellevue kitchen and had never been cleaned on the inside.
It was a built-in model with a stainless steel cavity and a drop-down door. The inner door panel was cleaned last among the wet steps, since drips from above land on it.
Drying the steel
Stainless steel left to air-dry keeps every wipe mark. The cavity was dried and buffed with a clean microfiber cloth until the walls reflected the light evenly, without streaks. Then the tray went back on its ring.
