A big sectional sofa is a good measure of how a house is living. In this Redmond home it wrapped around the living room, and on the day of the first visit it was covered in throws, loose cushions and a bag, with a blanket bunched across the middle seats. Nothing dirty in the dramatic sense. Just a month of real life.
This was the first visit for a new client who signed up for monthly cleaning. On a first visit the cleaner walks the home before starting, notes the problem zones, and confirms the plan with the client. Here the plan was the core of any regular clean: the living room, the bedrooms, the floors and the dust.
The sectional came first. Cushions were set back upright along the backs, throws were folded and stacked at the end, and the floor around it was vacuumed. In an open living room and kitchen like this one, the sofa sets how tidy the whole space looks.
The bedrooms took longer. One carpeted room was doing several jobs at once: a bedroom, storage for water-sports boards, and a space for the dog, with a crate and two dog beds. There was an ironing board, a standing fan with its cord across the floor, clothes on the bed and a toy in the middle of the carpet.
A carpet cannot be vacuumed properly while it is covered, so the cleaner started by giving everything a place. The boards were stood against the wall, the bed was made, and the floor was cleared edge to edge. Only then was the carpet vacuumed, and dust was wiped from the surfaces around the room. Items were put back where they belonged, not moved into a pile somewhere else.
The point of monthly cleaning is that the next visit starts from here, not from zero. When the main zones get a regular pass, the mess never gets the chance to pile up into a job that takes a whole weekend.
